Roy The Boy looks ahead to the Alpine Skiing World Cup and believes Lindsay Vonn offers very good value for the overall title at 51/20 with Betway.
Vonn to Follow in Alpine World Cup
This time last year Betswot’s Winter-sports following were advised to back Marcel Hirscher to win the Overall World Cup Alpine Ski title.
Days later the advice was changed to ‘have your conkers on’ as we got wind of a season-ending injury to Hirscher’s chief adversary, Aksel Lund Svindal.
12 months later and history may be about to repeat itself albeit this time in the woman’s category.
Currently Anna Fenninger is top-priced 13/20 to win the Overall Title for the third consecutive time. Her cause has been helped by last year’s runner-up, Tina Maze deciding to skip the entire 2015/16 season.
However, she will still face stiff opposition from Lindsey Vonn who was the winner of the Overall Title in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012. She then missed part of the 2012/13 season and all of 2014. Last season the American did not enter the fray until December but still finished third overall after winning eight races.
Lindsey Vonn is undoubtedly the better Downhill and Super G skier but it is Fennnger’s point-scoring ability in Giant Slaloms which is the supposed deciding factor in her holding the mantle of favouritism.
However, odds compilers seem oblivious to Vonn making a point of uncharacteristically racing in Giant Slaloms towards the end of last season and should she adopt the same policy at any part of the forthcoming season she will surely make a mockery of the 5/2 odds currently available about her.
And now for the twist: Just days ago it was reported that Fenninger has been forced to stop training due to a reoccurring knee injury. With the season starting in three weeks there have to be grave concerns about the Austrian being fit enough for the opening races not alone compete this side of Christmas.
If that’s the case Vonn becomes a clear odds-on favourite and therein, all factors considered, she is an even bigger ‘must back’ proposition in the current market.
Betway are top-priced 51/20 about Lindsey Vonn, while 888, Unibet and 42Red are offering 5/2. Sportingbet are 2/1.
