15.00 Gowran Park 3m1f Thyestes Chase
Just a quick line or two on all of them. No very strong fancy but there’s a few bets to be had all the same as some of these have no chance and there’s favourable place terms on offer.
Alpha des Obeaux – in decent form but still handicapped to his very best and there’s hardly improvement coming at this stage. Claiming helps, could sneak into a distant 4th.
Pleasant Company – wants further unless the ground is very deep, which it isn’t.
Invitation Only – plenty short enough for what he has achieved. Trip is a question-mark, has made mistakes in big races and he’ll need to take a decent step forward on seasonal reappearance 3wks ago.
Mall Dini – still a maiden over fences after 12 tries. Tries being an ironic choice of word. A repeat of his Kim Muir effort will see him close but career best needed.
Monbeg Notorious – seasonal reappearance and from a mark 15lbs higher than last year’s winning mark – no thanks.
Sumos Novios – 8th last year; returns as an 11yo off 4lbs higher – no thanks.
Dounikos – gets 4lbs from the fav Invitation Only which looks good given he finished on his tail in a Leopardstown G1 last season. Won on sole Gowran start. Ran ok (7th) in the Paddy Power at Xmas, certainly better than his efforts in the spring. Needs to step up again and any more rain will help.
Pairofbrowneyes – Up 10lbs for course win on first start for Willie. Definitely a chance he can extract a little more improvement this season. Wasn’t disgraced in the Paddy Power on seasonal reappearance.
Valseur Lido – has been well below par on his last few starts and unlikely to see this out strongly.
Up For Review – Lightly raced 10yo due to injury. More rain the better for him. He hasn’t beaten much in his two chase wins so 146 might be a stiff enough mark.
Some Neck – Another lightly raced Mullins inmate. Surprised Richie Deegan rides as I’d have had him as one of the top Willie horses on form. Won his beginners chase around here and a G2 last time out shows he’s arriving in better form than many. If he drifts due to jockey bookies I’m interested but not at 7/1.
Isleofhopendreams – want’s the ground borderline unraceable and probably wants an extra half mile to be at his very best.
Polidam – trip is a worry. Well beaten at all the spring festivals. Will need to drop 4-5lbs before winning again.
General Principle – Irish National winner, now only 4lbs higher and wasn’t disgraced in the Paddy Power. I wonder will Gordon be thinking about Fairyhouse rather than Gowran? Jack rides so I guess not.
Out Sam – another for Gordon, this time the Cork National winner but he’s been average enough since in similar events (Troytown 5th, Porterstown 7th) . A well beaten 6th here 12mts ago, hard to fancy.
Bellow Mome – first start in 655 days. Willie is good but not that good.
Borice – never involved in the Paddy Power on first start for Gordon. If there is a long-term plan (ridden like there is one) I suspect this isn’t it.
Mr Diablo – Last one to get in. 2nd to a good thing in the Troytown but it was a weak enough renewal. Not as good next time but that was a hot race in Navan. Had a big win off 133 last term so 137 isn’t a horrific mark. Not convinced he’ll get home.
