Teaplanter looks at Thursday's racing with Take Charge a strong selection in the first race at Epsom.
Epsom is one of the few tracks in the country that John Fretwell has yet to taste success at, but that may change in the first race of the day at the Surrey venue.
Take Charge is his representative in this 7 furlong contest and after shaping with a lot of encouragement on his debut at Doncaster 7 weeks ago, he should take plenty of beating here. In that maiden, he was dropped out the back by Fergal Lynch and his rider was content to gently nudge him out in the final couple of furlongs in a manner which was to educate him but not necessarily to take a hand in the business end of proceedings. Despite the easy ride he received, he made steady progress in the closing stages and was beaten 6 lengths by the winner Comicas.
He was 66/1 for that race and given that the Fretwell horses are generally well backed when they are fancied, it was clear that it was the not the day for him, rather than the fact that he possesses very little ability. The form of the race looks ok, with the 2nd winning since, but we would expect a significant amount of improvement on this second start, especially if he is strong in the market.
Lytham St Annes probably has the best form on offer in an average contest, although Wigmore Hall also ran a solid race last time at Newmarket behind an easy winner in the shape of Taneen. However we would expect Take Charge to bely these early quotes of between 8/1 and 10/1 and he looks worth backing each way at these odds, even if the lack of an 8th runner does reduce the appeal a little.
