The Messenger previews Kempton today and he has two bets which start with Mazzini in the 2:40.
Kempton 2.40: Mazzini
Raced almost exclusively on sand these days, Mazzini is capable of a winning reappearance on a track that suits and in a race with a likely strong pace that will be ideal too.
The gelding put up a spectacular performance in first time cheekpieces at Chelmsford in July, making all to win by 5l. He paid for that with a 10lb rise in the weights, but continued to perform with credit in defeat. He had probably had enough for the year by the time he finished sixth here on his last start, but has at least been given a 2lb drop in the weights to help him.
A strongly run 6f suits him best and he should not have to make his own running with Tropics and Swift Approval likely to do that hard work for him.
Kempton 5.00: Curbyourenthusiasm
A perennial slow starter but strong finisher, Curbyourenthusiasm is so high in the ratings that he has few handicaps on his favoured All Weather surface that suits his running style. Therefore he struggles in small field conditions races that rarely have a true gallop.
However the 7yo has a suitable opportunity here and comes off the back of a decent effort in the All Weather Championships when beaten little more than 2l in a race run in an unsuitable crawl. He has previously run with great credit here when beaten just a neck by the top stayer Watersmeet.
His overall record in handicaps in Britain is good with a 4-8 record, but that also includes wins on his last two handicap races. They were at Chelmsford from a 5lb higher mark than today and Doncaster in a valuable contest at the Leger meeting. Regular pilot Jamie Spencer was on board for all four handicap wins and is back in the saddle today.
