Teaplanter UK Saturday Racing Previews – Part 2

Teaplanter has already previewed Ascot and he picks out some other bets on the remainder of the UK Saturday cards including General Mahler and Laurium at Haydock.

Haydock 3:20

This is a very competitive staying handicap hurdle for the time of year and TheEaglehaslanded heads the betting after his impressive wins at Cheltenham and then at Warwick. However he is up a further 10lb from Warwick and up in class and we will take him on as a result.

The two that we like in this contest are General Mahler and Laurium.

General Mahler showed plenty of promise in the point to point field when he was 2nd at Dromahane in October and looked as though he had a future as a stayer under rules. It was no real surprise to see him struggle struggle on his bumper debut at Musselburgh, but he has gradually got his act together over hurdles and won a handicap over 2.5 miles at Sedgefield before falling at the 3rd last at Ayr when he was stepped up to 3 miles. On this occasion he was travelling extremely well and looked ready to take up the lead and set sail for victory and the staying trip looked to be very much in his favour. This is a better contest and the ground will be faster, but he should handle it and he looks well weighted here, with Jack Sherwood claiming 5lb and helping to negate the 4lb that he is out of the handicap. The trip is slightly shorter, but that should not be a concern and he looks ready to continue on the upward curve and 18/1 appeals each way with Betfair Sports and Betway.

Laurium is also worth an interest off just a 1lb higher mark than when running so well last time at Cheltenham. That was his first completion after unseating his rider on his two previous starts and he looked set to win until getting run out of things on the climb to the line. He travelled really well through that race and this even faster ground should be in his favour and the flat track over the longer distance looks like it could be a positive. He is still a relatively fresh horse and open to plenty of improvement and he looks worth an interest at 14/1 to go along with General Mahler.
