Roy The Boy previews the Dafabet Masters showdown between Mark Selby and Ronnie O'Sullivan and is very keen on Selby beating The Rocket.
Ronnie never showed enough tame an in-form Mark Selby
The much anticipated return of Ronnie O’Sullivan to competitive action was a major disappointment. The five-time World Champion did beat the aging Mark Williams in the opening round of the ongoing Masters, but it was hard work and his decisive final-frame victory, when the scores were 5-5, only came about when Williams’ missed a risky ‘glory shot’ and left his opponent an open table.
By contrast Mark Selby dismantled his opening round opponent, Ricky Walden, by six-frames-to-nil. Setting up a quarter final showdown with O’Sullivan on Thursday afternoon.
The last time Selby and O’Sullivan met it was the 2014 World Championship final, which Selby won by 18 frames to 14 and I fancy he can give ‘the Rocket’ yet more pain.
The simple truth is... Ronnie O’Sullivan was unconvincing against Mark Williams looking distinctly ring-rusty, while Selby has been faultless in recent games. Prior to the Masters, and over the course of two days in early January, Selby posted victories against Judd Trump 3-2, Ricky Walden 3-0, Robert Milkins 3-1, Mark Williams 3-2, Joe Perry 3-1, and Barry Hawkins 3-0. Go figure!
Personally I made Selby a marginal odds-on shot for this match and so Coral’s 11/8 is simply knock-out. Nevertheless, erring on the side of caution, and at the price I was expecting, I’ll have some of the 20/23 about Mark Selby given a 1.5 frame start in the handicap market. It may be worth splitting stakes on the two however.
2 points win Mark Selby +1.5 frames to beat Ronnie O’Sullivan at 20/23 with Coral
