Teaplanter, fresh from 9/4 and 11/2 winners this week, believes that Sagaciously might be underestimated in the market in the Cushman & Wakefield Fillies Handicap at Ascot.
Ed Dunlop is not having the greatest of seasons and his prizemoney haul would be negligible, were it not for the exploits of Trip To Paris. However he is an excellent trainer of fillies and the patient approach that he seems to have adopted with Sagaciously could begin to reap its rewards in this 12 furlong handicap.
The quite stoutly bred daughter of Lawman made a winning debut at 50/1 last September at Leicester, but proved this was absolutely no fluke when running a very solid race on her second and most recent appearance in the Listed Montrose Stakes at Newmarket last November. She was up with the pace for much of this race, but lacked the gears to go with the leaders in the final couple of furlongs. However under hands and heels she stayed on very nicely again at the end of the race and really marked herself down as a filly to watch when she tackled longer distances at three years.
The form of the race is very solid, with Irish Rookie finishing runner up in the French 1000 Guineas and running a solid race at Royal Ascot in the Coronation Stakes, while Lady of Dubai, who was second, is a listed winner and was 3rd in the Oaks last time. While we cannot take this form as meaning that Sagaciously will immediately be up to listed level, she looked the type that would improve plenty for the winter and this trip of 12 furlongs should be well within her compass.
There is a concern that she has been off until mid summer, but the prices of 11/1 make up for that and with an Irish Oaks Entry still in place, it seems that she is still well regarded by her handler. There are a number of useful rivals in this contest, but some look in the grip of the handicapper and Forever Popular was not impressive when shedding her maiden tag last time. Dreamlike is very much respected, but we are happy to take the double figure odds on a filly that could still have plenty to offer this season.
