The Messenger has two bets on Saturday and they come from Newbury and Ripon.
Newbury 3.00: Sabador
I am giving one more chance to Sabador who had no real chance last time when trying to make all in a huge field at Ascot. With excellent hold up jockey Gerard Mosse on board today I expect much more from Ed Walker’s 4yo if ridden with a bit more restraint.
Sabador showed what he is capable of when fourth in the Victoria Cup back in May, and he has had major excuses on his two starts since. That ill conceived attempt to make all at Ascot last time and a bad draw and wide trip throughout at Chester, a track unlikely to suit this galloping type in any case.
His last win was gained at Ayr last season when given plenty of cover and I am hoping from his middle draw that those restraining tactics are tried again. Yesterday’s card at Newbury again favoured low numbers on the straight track and so Sabador has a decent enough draw in the circumstances.
Ripon 3.15: Growl
Growl is a standing dish in these big handicaps and is now weighted to win one having not triumphed since 2016. However a recent fourth at York, followed by a third in the Stewards Cup suggests that his revised mark of 99 is very fair. He was beaten less than 5l off 10lbs higher in this contest last year and there should be enough early pace from a low draw to give him a tow into the race.
