Jimmy McGinty looks at the Thursday night game between the Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals.
Looking at Thursday Night Football in week 6 paid dividends with a dominant Eagles display so I’m going to get involved again in week 7. This week it’s the Cardinals who appeal as a strong bet.
Denver Broncos @ Arizona Cardinals
Both of these sides are much better at home than on the road. The Cardinals covered the spread in their last two home games - narrow losses to Seattle and Chicago (both decent sides of late). Meanwhile the Broncos got well beaten in their last two road games - at Jets (by 18pts) and Ravens (by 13pts). Denver enjoy a significant advantage playing home games at altitude yet after having 4 home games in their opening 6, they sit at just 2-4. In road games under their current head-coach Vance Joseph they are 1-8 against the spread! This is a bad side playing poorly, with a bad road record, yet they have been made favourites on the road here. I’d have it as pick ‘em so I’m more than happy to take Cardinals +2.5pts in what should be a low scoring game.
The Cardinals defensive front is potent so the timing of Denver losing their starting left-guard Ronald Leary is far from ideal. Case Keenum, who is not having a good season, will be under significant pressure all night.
The worry is it’ll be something similar for Josh Rosen behind the Cardinals weak O-Line, but hopefully the Cardinals keep it simple and use David Johnson a lot. DJ, despite not being his dominant self, is the Cardinals best offensive weapon – and he won’t have a better matchup all season. Denver have had absolutely no run defense over the past few weeks.
Having a rookie head-coach (Wilks in Arizona) on a short week can traditionally be a major negative but the Broncos head-coach isn’t any good, so it evens itself out somewhat here.
