The Canadian Grand Prix is next in the F1 calendar and Roy The Boy's preview has identified some picks of potential interest.
The Driver to Beat
Formula 1 makes a visit to a true speed track this weekend when the circus stops off at Montreal’s Gilles Villeneuve Circuit. Daniel Ricciardo’s Monaco victory may be fresh in the mind but his Red Bull is sure to struggle in Canada where the inference is not on high down-force but high speeds.
Traditionally the Canadian track’s long straights have been custom made for Hamilton’s Mercedes and he has won here for the last three seasons. I cannot see much reason for that run of form to end. Yes Vettel’s Ferrari is quick but it is likely to be happier around Silverstone than here.
Hamilton has triumphed here six times, starting from pole on five of those occasions. Victory on Sunday would match the race record of seven Canadian GP wins held by Michael Schumacher.
Perez for Points Visit
Sergio Perez has finished all but one of his last 68 races, suffice to say he is hyper reliable.
The Mexican has previously finished on the podium at this venue (in a Sauber of all things) and he has already collected some silverware in 2018 – at Baku, another track which boasts long fast straights. Consequently he looks a shoe-in for a top-10 at the very least.
Ferrari for Fastest Lap
Daniel Ricciardo is as short as 3/1 for the ‘fastest lap’ in Canada. Odds compilers are aware he has claimed three of them already this year and they clearly expect him to do what teammate Max Verstappen did in Monaco – pit for fresh tyres very late in the race as a consequence of starting someway down the starting grid. It gave Verstappen the fastest lap of that contest.
That’s all well and good but I don’t think his car will be fast enough here no matter how late he stops. Instead Kimi Raikkonen is the call in this market. His Ferrari will surely be the second fastest car here (at worst) and the Finn has claimed the fastest lap here four times since 2005 – not bad considering he was out of the sport for two full seasons. He is no good thing but he is never a 12/1 shot either – so head to Bet365 where that price is on offer.
