Shane Lambert looks at the slump of the Chicago Cubs and he recommends bets on Cleveland Indians and Houston Astros to win the ALCS at 14/1 and 33/1.
The Chicago Cubs are a team that have really calmed down when their start to the season is compared to what they've done lately. It wasn't that long ago that the Cubs were a team playing over .700 baseball, however following the weekend they are now just 51-30 for a .630 winning percentage. That's still good enough for the best mark in the majors, however the Texas Rangers are just off the pace, finishing the weekend at .627.
The good news for those that are still open in terms of their futures commitments for Major League Baseball is that it appears as though the Cubbies took in a ton of bets. They are best-priced at +325 (13/4) with bet365 on World Series futures, odds that arguably reflect the .700 team that they were a little while back instead of the mediocre team that's been playing about .500 baseball for around a month now.
Such odds are way too short to take with so much baseball still to be played. With regard to Chicago, they are merely one of the teams that are in the thick of things still, but they don't look all that scary anymore and there's no guarantee that things will turn around for them. There should be more parity when it comes to the World Series betting odds and I would want at least 5/1 for a starting point if considering the Cubs.
Yet where there's an over-rated team there's usually an under-rated team in ante-post betting. The Cleveland Indians have been surging of late, at least when you throw out their most recent result (a 17-1 thrashing from Toronto). That game aside Cleveland are 23-7 in their last 30 games and they are up to .613 Baseball on the season. Their betting odds in futures markets promise to shorten from 14/1 soon, the current going rate for the World Series available with both BetVictor and Ladbrokes. Each-way betting on Cleveland gets you 7/1 to win the ALCS, better odds that you can get for them if you take the market straight-up (i.e. 5/1 is otherwise the best price with Ladbrokes).
For another option, the Houston Astros remain an interesting team as well as they continue to improve their winning percentage after a very slow start. They are still buried deep in the division and that could relegate them to the one-game playoff at the end of the regular season. However, they are 33/1 with Coral and Ladbrokes for the World Series championship, with each-way options available with each firm.
