Preview of Mexican Grand Prix by Roy The Boy.
Hamilton’s huge given Mercedes record and his desire to win
Mercedes dominated the first two Mexican Grand Prix. 2017 represented a bump in the road, but Hamilton could never win after suffering a puncture and his teammate performed well enough to take second.
Red Bull team boss has made no secret of their ambition to win this race, seeing this circuit as one of the more likely places where they can claim a victory with slow-speed corners working in his cars favour.
But he said the same in Hungary where the Red Bulls qualified and raced terribly. Personally I think the Mercedes, which won in Hungary and another so called ‘gaff track’, Singapore, is a better than ever at these type of circuits and is the car to beat this weekend.
I cannot believe Vettel is trading as favourite to win the race – and that’s despite being mindful of Hamilton only needing a top-seven finish to claim the World Championship. Hamilton, 2/1 at Paddy Power, will surely go for glory and not just a safe few points. Vettel meanwhile… he’s not finished first or second in any of his last five race starts.
Go low on finishers
At the prices 6/4 (Powers again) about under 15.5 cars being classified as finishers is a bet. Half of the last ten races have had 15 or less finishers and this race last year also saw 15 cars cross the line by the race end. Beyond the stats, it is noteworthy this race is staged at considerable altitude and that ‘thin air’ unquestionably put extra stress on engine components, especially turbo chargers.
Of the others
Other bets we like are ‘Red Bull NOT to have a double points finish’ which is 5/4 at Bet365. Verstappen and Ricciardo (Red Bulls drivers) have failed to finish 11 times this season yet no car part seemingly fails twice!
A winning margin in excess of 6sec is only 4/6 but it is a shortie to put in with other wagers. Last year’s winner scored by almost 20sec and pursuing cars will be mighty keen to turn their engines down (given the lack of air) once the chase is clearly futile and threats from behind are eliminated.
