Johanna Konta looks set to have a very big 2017 tennis season

Johanna Konta looks a solid bet to win more than 1.5 WTA titles in 2017 according to Shane Lambert.

Johanna Konta's OVER/UNDER for tour wins in 2017 has been set low at 1.5 with sportsbook bet365. The OVER line has been priced at 11/10 while the UNDER line has been priced at 2/3. Basically if you think Konta wins 0 or 1 title in 2017 in total, you take the UNDER while if you think she wins more, you take the OVER. My argument is in favor of the latter.

Firstly, I can definitely see why Konta has a low bar at underdog odds. Despite a ranking of 10th in the world, she has never been that much of a tournament closer. She's 25 years old and so far in her entire career she only has one title. That came in Stanford back in the summer where she beat Venus Williams in the final.

However, Konta is probably due for a career year. A major difference between the start of 2017 and 2016 is that Konta enters this upcoming year as the World No. 10. Last season she started the year ranked as the World No. 48 and making the Australian Open semifinals didn't immediately get her into the Top 25.

Her improved ranking this season is very important to note, because rankings affect seeding in every event and other advantages. She might lose some ranking points at Melbourne Park, but even if she drops five spots she'll sit prettier in 2017 than 2016 in terms of early-round byes and easier early-round matches. There will still be the tough players at the business end of tournaments, but with the early rounds promising to be easier she should have more energy to deal with matches that have antagonized her in the past. Furthermore, she should buzz around the late rounds a lot more often and, with luck a factor in any individual tournament, that's half the battle.

Konta doesn't have to win a difficult tournament for the OVER to cash in for the betting special. She can lose all the Slams and all the Premier Mandatory events in the first round. If she wins two piddly events like Stanford, Eastbourne, Birmingham, Nottingam, Stuttgart, Monterrey, Acapulco, or any of the other low-tiered events she entered last season then the OVER wins. If many of those events she could be the 1st or 2nd seed.

2017 could be a great a good time on tour right now for the unproven players as Serena and Venus Williams both get over the hill. Victoria Azarenka's pregnant and Maria Sharapova is suspended until the last week of April. Roberta Vinci was talking retirement before committing to another year, but she's really up there too. That could leave a lot of late-round opportunities open that have been so impossible to get to for a player of Konta's caliber. I think the Brit is set for a career year at what has to be called the prime of her life athletically.
