Jakub Holusa looks worth chancing at big odds in 1500m final

The Messenger looks ahead to the Mens 1500 metres final this evening and he likes a bet on the outsider Jakub Holusa.

20.30 Mens 1500 Metres final – World Athletics Championships : Jakub Holusa

Paddy Power might have made a glitch in leaving improving Czech athlete Jakub Holusa as much as double the price of their competitors for tonight’s Mens 1500 metre final.

The 29 year old has sailed through qualifying with the minimum of fuss, showing a great turn of pace to win his semi-final. He does not have a great pedigree on a world stage, though did win the European Indoor title in his homeland two years ago. However he has improved since concentrating at this distance over the past couple of seasons, having cut little ice over two laps.

Most of the longer distance races this week have been tactical affairs and although he has improved his personal best to a useful 3:33, he will be helped if this turns into a burn up over the last 600 metres. That old 800 metre speed will come into play as a result and he needed no second invitation in his semi-final on seeing a gap open on the inside careering into the space to win that race impressively. Unfortunately there is no each-way betting available, but he still looks worth a small punt.
