Teaplanter looks at the Maiden Stakes at Newbury on Wednesday and believes there is plenty of value in the price of the Andrew Balding trained High Admiral.
The standard of 3 year old maiden is likely to deteriorate now that we have reached mid summer and backward three year olds that might have a future hurdling will be commonplace in these events. However this is potentially a useful contest at Newbury on Thursday.
Included heads the betting based on his two runs, the latter of which was much more encouraging when he was beaten a length by Plane Song at Salisbury last month. That form might prove to be useful, but I have my doubts about it and although the front two pulled away from the rest, Included did not look like he was putting it all in at the business end. He can be opposed at odds of 7/4.
There are some well bred newcomers on show as well, but the horse we like is the Andrew Balding trained High Admiral. This son of New Approach has not run since December, when he made quite an encouraging debut at Kempton. He was sluggish from the stalls on that occasion and David Probert then settled him at the rear of the field for much of the race. He was still near the back as they turned in, but began to make progress up the straight and shaped very nicely, staying on well under a gentle hands and heels ride. The form has been franked by a number of the beaten horses, not least Mr Singh, who was second at Royal Ascot and runs in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket on Thursday.
While we obviously cannot take that form literally, there is not much doubt that High Admiral could be much better than he showed on his debut. He is bred to stay middle distances and is a half brother to some useful performers. The manner of his debut suggested that he would improve a lot for the winter on his back, the experience and the step up in distance from a mile. The application of a hood is a slight concern, but there is plenty of upside to him and he looks good value each way at 11/2, as with the anticipated progress, he has a solid chance of winning and should be very hard to keep out of the places.
