French Racing – Spiritfix could be star on Compeigne card

Frazzled takes a look at the first race at Compeigne today and he likes the look of a potentially Group class filly in Spiritfix,

The ground at Compeigne is set to be testing today and it is the only reason that a max bet is not advised on the Andre Fabre trained Spiritfix.

The daughter of Invincible Spirit made a very eye catching debut on the all weather surface at Deauville at the start of the month when she was 4th to Ibaaz. She was trapped on the rail and could not get a clear run until she eventually got a little room in the final 100 yards. When the gap appeared, she quickened up nicely under Maxine Guyon to finish on the heels of the leaders and can be deemed very unlucky. There is little doubt that she would have won with a clear passage and went straight into the notebook after that.

The major positive since then is that the form is working out very well. The winner was previously second to Pas De Soucis, who has since finished a very good second to the 100 rated Hurricane at Cagnes Sur Mer. The runner up Eze won next time by 6 lengths at Lion D'Angers and is now a 90 rated performer. Spiritfix can be rated as their equals at the very least, based on that debut display and with the prospect of plenty of improvement to come, she looks very much a group class filly in the making. This field lacks depth with the only one of real interest being Silk Words, who is a Dubawi half sister to Ibn Khaldoun. However the ground could be a big issue for her.

With regards to the ground for Spiritfix, it is encouraging that Invincible Spirit gets plenty of performers who act well on a soft surface, while she is out of a Bering dam that won on heavy herself and has produced useful performers like Sofast (who won on very soft ground) and Eyeful.

It would be preferable to not see such a testing surface today, but we would have made Spiritfix around the 1/2 mark for this contest, so the 5/4 with Paddy Power has to be snapped up despite slight reservations about the ground conditions.
