How a player that barely managed to keep his place in England's World Cup side this summer, Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, could be installed as 4/9 favourite to be his country's next captain is beyond me. He's far from certain to play in the next World Cup and certainly doesn't lead by example at either club or country. He's not captaincy material.
But the fact that only 3 players - Rooney, Cahill (4/1) and Hart (13/2) - stand at single odds in the betting says a lot about the sparcity of leadership at England these days.
So who will Roy Hodgson choose? God knows. But for me, the most likely choice for him is Joe Hart. The Manchester City keeper is certain to command his position well into the future, plays at a big club and has far more experience at international level than Cahill.
