Escalator and Boy In the Bar are The Messenger Sunday Bets.
Doncaster 3.40: Boy in the Bar
Boy in the Bar’s profile this season is one of an ageing gelding needing a few runs to find his best form, but he put in an excellent effort at Epsom on Derby Day despite going off far too fast. To hang on for fourth in the circumstances was a cracking run and James Doyle takes over in the saddle today. Doyle is 2-2 on the 7yo and the horse is now back to his last winning mark on turf from Goodwood last May.
Doncaster 4.40: Escalator
There was conspicuous promise from Escalator in his three maiden/novice races to qualify for a handicap mark and after a couple of months off to allow him to strengthen up further I am expecting far better from the Charlie Fellowes trained gelding from a workable opening mark of 75.
He seemed to be clueless on debut at Leicester and looked set to be well out the back at one stage, but ended up getting to within 4l of the winner in a race that has worked out pretty well. The long home stretch at Leicester helped him use his long galloping stride, something Doncaster should enable him to do as well.
Since then he was a strong finishing second around the tighter Wolverhampton track and never really got in a blow around Kempton’s even tighter 10f circuit which would not have suited at all. Whilst in time 10f is probably going to be his optimum distance, this stiff mile should give him the time to finish off strongly and I favour him over some more exposed rivals.
