Three bets for The Messenger at Cheltenham on Saturday.
Cheltenham 1.50: Doing Fine.
Doing Fine looks an ideal sort for this staying chase as he simply gallops all day. He was third in that same race at last month’s meeting, just running out of time to catch Cogry. The extra 2f here will considerably aid his chances. He was a convincing winner of the 3m4f handicap on the Old Course here in April and has found his niche in these marathon contests of late.
Cheltenham 2.25: Foxtail Hill
Nigel Twiston-Davies won this race with a front runner back in 2010 with Little Josh and his Foxtail Hill could repeat the feat in this year’s rather sub-standard renewal.
A game winner of a 2m5f chase on New Years Day when making all, he produced a career best effort to win over 2m at last month’s fixture here. I did not expect him to burn off some real speedsters that day, but not only could no horse lay up with him early on, but he outlasted Le Prezien up the hill when challenged late on. A 7lb rise is fair and there does not look to be many obvious pace threats to him early on.
Cheltenham 3.30: Diable de Sivola
This race features plenty of early pace and contains many horses making hay in lesser company over the summer, but who might come unstuck against classier opposition here.
Diable de Sivola seemed to find 2m3f around Fontwell an insufficient test of stamina on his reappearance. The form of that second place was seriously boosted by winner Dashing Oscar’s Bangor victory in midweek. The 4yo was also a fast finishing fifth in the Fred Winter here at the Festival and he should improve plenty for this step up to 2m5f on a stiff track.
