The Messenger previews Saturday's racing and has bets including Callet Mad in the Summer Plate at Market Rasen.
Newbury 1.50: Emotionless
A Classic hopeful for Godolphin a couple of seasons ago, Emotionless has clearly had his problems since then. However the fact he is kept in training looks significant and he can overcome an absence for his first run in Britain since Glorious Goodwood two years ago.
His second place to Benbatl in Dubai in January over 9f proves he retains his old ability and he was an impressive Group 2 winner at Doncaster as a juvenile, so much will depend on whether he is ready enough to be at his best today.
Nothing in the opposition gives too much cause for concern especially as a couple – Desert Encounter and Spark Plus are usually reliant on a strong pace to be at their best, something they may not get today. Therefore the tactically versatile selection is favoured.
Newbury 2.25: Coeur de Lion
A very interesting contest, the first running of a 2m handicap.
There is surely a race of this type in Coeur de Lion and this relentless galloper will be better suited to this track than the short finishing straights of Chester and Ascot he has faced on his last two starts. That said he ran with great credit on both occasions, beaten a neck in the Chester Cup consolation and then only 4l behind the winner in the Ascot Stakes. I think a strongly run 2m will be ideal and he was only just beaten here when coming from way back in the field in the spring. Cheekpieces will sharpen him up and his low draw is a bonus given the short run to the first bend.
Market Rasen 3.15: Calett Mad
Calett Mad ran over hurdles throughout last season, but prior to that enjoyed a fine year over fences in 2016/7. He won two of his last three starts over hurdles, his Pertemps win at Musselburgh being a particularly noteworthy effort. Sharp tracks seem to suit him best as does good going – he was second off just a 1lb lower mark at Ayr’s Scottish National meeting on his last chase outing on similar ground. I think he could be well treated against lesser class opponents.
