Justifying opponent dodging in US classic crop

Sky Bet’s 16/1 about a US Triple Crown winner in 2018 was, in hindsight, a huge price.  But I have become more and more amazed about how difficult it is to place a bet with that outfit, beyond £7.52 that is. So it was not really a ‘price’ more of a headline grabber.

Anyway, we did have a Triple Crown winner in 2018 with ‘Justify’ winning all three legs and remaining unbeaten in his career which amounts to five races in the space of four months.

That only tells me one thing, lay him to bejaysus for the Breeders Cup Classic if you can.  The Bob Baffert-trained horse is a short as 6/4 for that race which is five months away.  That is a long long way away and a lot can happen between now and then – primarily him going over-the-top.

I don’t think ‘Justify’ is a superstar just yet and when Todd Pletcher announced he was not running ‘Audible’ in the Belmont – a horse who is in the same ownership as US racing’s new messiah – he did so through clenched teeth.

Therein I don’t believe his claim:  “I don’t feel like he [Audible] is as well as he was leading up to the Derby. I just don’t feel like he is where he needs to be to compete in the Belmont,” for one minute.  When adding: “We’ll freshen him up for the Jim Dandy or the Haskell” he may of also said, “the owners have told me they will not be running Justify in one or both of those!”

See Red in Newcastle

One domestic horse I think you should back is Amazing Red in the Northumberland Plate which takes place at the end of June.  I’ve followed this five-year old since he won on his second start impressively back in 2016.

A half-brother to Melbourne Cup legend Red Cadeux, I was convinced then this Ed Dunlop-trained horse would/will win a major race once he matured and was stepped-up trip.

Saturday’s impressive three-length victory at Newmarket in a Class 2 was certainly a nice race with 13 runners and £30k ‘up top’ but the Northumberland Cup, on an all-weather surface he is accustomed too, would be the cherry on the knickerbocker.
