Rag2gar previews the Premier League Darts and he is very confident that Michael Van Gerwen will top the table. He has other bets on Adrian Lewis and Dave Chisnall.
The 2016 Premier League Darts gets underway this Thursday night and it is (and I'm sure SKY will be only too happy to tell you) the best Premier League yet.
The defending Premier League Champion Gary Anderson comes into this competition in fine form, having recently lifted his second consecutive World Championship title only a few weeks ago. The Scotsman is not the favourite though however. That title belongs to world number one Michael Van Gerwen. The green machine was visibly stunned after his World Championship exit in December and few would rule him out of winning this year's title.
Van Gerwen, who topped the league table last year, is very suited to this quick made-for-TV format and I fully expect him to top the league once again this year. For those who are unaware of the Premier League format, the players must play for 15 weeks in a league style phase of matches which ultimately culminates in the top four playing out a playoff for the title in May. The winner of the league format is in many ways a much more worthy winner because he will have had to play well for 15 weeks whereas the actual winner of the Premier League really only has to play well on final's night itself (and make the playoffs).
I think some of the outsiders are a decent bet in the outright market. I can see them getting in the top 4 and then really it is just the luck of the draw on final's night itself. The first of the outsiders I like is World Championship runner-up Adrian Lewis. I think Lewis showed plenty to like throughout this year's World Championship and even more so towards the later rounds. I would expect him to make the playoffs and if he does you would have a very lively 12/1 shot on your hands.
The same can be said for Dave Chisnall. One of the stand out performers in last year's Premier League, I too can see him making it to final's night. At 20/1 he could also have a say in the playoffs and if him and Lewis make it you would have half the field on final's night both at double figure odds. That certainly would be a good position to be in.
However for me, the best bet is Michael Van Gerwen to top the Premier League itself. He's the best player leg on leg in world darts and really excels in short, first to eight leg formats. He's going to get the most wins, the most points, score the best averages which of course means he's going to top the league table. It's the banker of this year's Premier League.
