Akhlaaq and Brogan are best bets for Wednesday Horse Racing

The Messenger previews Wednesday's Horse racing and he likes Akhlaaq at the Doncastere St Leger meeting and has an interest in Brogan in the Carlisle maiden.

Dream of Dreams has the best form in this contest by some distance, by virtue of 3rd in the Railway Stakes in June. However his improvement might be levelling out now as an early season two year old and he could be vulnerable to an above average lightly raced rival. This tactic did not work out when we took on The Last Lion on Saturday, but Akhlaaq looks a really smart prospect when winning at Salisbury just under a month ago. He was green throughout the race and seemed a bit clueless to begin with when he was asked to quicken. However when he finally realised what was required he lengthened very impressively under Paul Hanagan and was a comfortable winner by a neck in the end.

He is by New Approach out of a smart Oasis Dream mare. Despite the speed on the dam side, he looks like he might want 7 furlongs, but he could still be really effective at this distance. He is well entered up in the top juvenile group races and we will hopefully see him build on his debut with an impressive win here.

Advised Bet:

1.5 points win Akhlaaq at 13/8 with BetVictor and Skybet

Carlisle 2:50

This is a moderate enough maiden, but it is interesting from a betting perspective because the well bred Mark Johnston newcomer is weak in the market and may not be suited by the ease in the ground and is dropping back in trip after running over 8.5 furlongs at Hamilton first time out. That effort was promising but the form does not look the strongest and she looks short enough here at 5/4.

Brogan is from a Tom Dascombe yard that would not be one of my favourites, but she shaped with a bit of promise first time at Kempton, in what was probably a reasonable maiden for the track. She did not settle very well during the early stages and it left with her with little gas in the tank in the closing stages, but she stayed on well enough under tender Richard Kingscore handling to hold on for 3rd place. Any further rain is likely to aid her cause as she is by Pivotal out of a mare that was very effective on soft ground. She is worth a small interest against the favourite in this contest.

Advised Bet:

1 point win Brogan at 7/2 with Bet365, William Hill and Paddy Power
