Hamilton’s too good here and Vettel will be in Bottas’ way
There’s been a huge plunge on Valtteri Bottas to win the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend. The Finn was available at 8/1 at the start of the week, he’s now as short as 7/2!
The price shift seems to have coincided with Mercedes boss being quoted as saying: “The championship pressure is off, so we can look at this as one race where we can really go for broke. Our Silver Arrow has won 10 races so far this season and we all want to add one more to that score - especially Valtteri, who has lost out on wins this season through bad luck and team orders.”
Indeed it sounds like the team are preparing themselves to dump a race victory on their No. 2 driver but is he quick enough to sit behind Lewis Hamilton and inherit a race win from him? He’s not been for most of the season and certainly wasn’t last time in Brazil.
The theory is good, but it’s a badly handicapped race as Hamilton is superior to the field and Bottas has been struggling to match Raikkonen, Vettel and Verstappen for race pace.
I think Hamilton will win this race, his team’s two cars have qualified first and second for the past four years here and it has also finished 1-2 for the past three. You could argue that form is strong enough to see him leading Bottas and moving aside but Vettel – the 7/4 race favourite let us not forget – is sure to be a fly-in-the-ointment for the Finnish driver.
Fastest lap for a departing driver?
It is tempting to put Bottas up for the ‘fastest lap’ accolade. He has claimed it the last twice and a remarkable seven times this year. But this is a one-stop race and that does not fall into the mould of how/why he has done so well in this field this season.
Raikkonen is certainly over-priced here at Paddy Power’s 14/1 (he’s having his last race for Ferrari) and so is Ricciardo at Betfred’s 11/2. The Australian is chasing his fifth ‘fastest lap’ of the season and he too is having his last race for his team (moving to Renault next year).
Fernando to make a point
While we are taking about drivers leaving their teams… Fernando Alonso is leaving the sport and he can do so in a blaze of glory by getting his cumbersome McLaren into a points paying position.
The Spaniard is 5/2 to make the points (finish in the top-10) which is amazing given he has done so nine times (from 20 races) this season and his course form reads: 7-2-2-5-9-17-10-9. As an added bonus… this go-cart type track is difficult to overtake on and he should qualify well - given it is not a circuit dependant on raw horsepower.
