We managed to get Toolmaker Me Dad beaten in the final of the Puppy Derby last week and even suggested winner Troy Zico was a bet at 12/1. They do say “even a blind squirrel can find a nut every now and then”! Let’s hope lightening can strike twice as Trade Fudge is fancied to beat favourite Droopys Verve in Saturday’s Steel City Cup final at Sheffield under similar circumstances.
Just like the Monmore Puppy Derby winner, Trade Fudge is a fast starter and is also ideally housed, in trap 6, to get the better of five rivals ... all railers or middle seeds.
Droopys Verve was very disappointing in the semi-final of this competition, beaten holding every chance, by Lightfoot King. He normally shows mighty pace in his races but the fizz was missing last weekend and while he passed rivals at the second bend and between the third and fourth corners it was noticeable he made no impression on the winner. Furthermore Droopys Verve has recently had his classification changed to ‘railer’ and, while he can clearly win from any trap and has some great track-craft, he definitely ran off wide at the opening bend in that semi.
Posting a 4.25sec sectional last time, Trade Fudge could definitely show enough zip to avoid any opening bend trouble caused by Droopys Verve or even fellow fast starter Roxholme Nidge (trap 1) who has not been getting home on the slow Owlerton Stadium surface and could be spent by halfway.
Trade Fudge @ 4/1 generally
