The Messenger looks at Saturday's racing and he has bets on Coeur De Lion and Borocco.
Newmarket 3.10: Coeur de Lion
Coeur de Lion is another horse who thrived over hurdles last season, winning twice before finishing lame in the Triumph Hurdle. Fortunately there was no major issue as he was back two months later winning on the flat at Nottingham – his stamina really kicking in late over 2m. He looks sure to improve for the extra 2f today and has a preference for cut in the ground, which he will get today. Trainer Alan King has kept him fresh, presumably for a tilt at the Cesarewitch itself next month, and then another jumping campaign. Only rated 79, he might need to win this to guarantee a run in the big race itself, so there is every incentive for him to be at his best today.
Newbury 3.25: Brorocco
Brorocco is a tricky ride, but will surely get his day in the spotlight in one of these big handicaps soon. He has to be dropped out and covered up as he takes a pull in his races, so needs luck in running. He did not get that when stopped at a crucial stage in his run at York last time, but the big field handicaps do bring out the best in him and this long straight provides jockey David Probert with time to find a clear passage and weave his way through.
1pt win – Coeur de Lion – 3.10 Newmarket at 4/1 with Paddy Power and William Hill
0.75pts each-way – Brorocco – 3.25 Newbury at 9/1 with Paddy Power and William Hill
